Lightning Strike

Lightning detection systems have discovered that lightning can travel a distance of 60 miles or more. Vertical lightning strikes can stretch a distance between 5 to 10 miles while Horizontal lightning strikes can be 60 miles or more.

The longest lightning bolts start at the beginning of a squall line and travel horizontally behind the squall line back into the clouds. To date, the longest recorded lightning bolt, which occurred in Texas, traveled a distance of 118 miles.
