Marvel in the Sky: Halley’s Comet

Halley's Comet

Halley’s Comet appears every 75 to 76 years.  It has had a recorded appearance since at least 240 BC. The last time Halley’s Comet crossed our planet’s sky was in 1986. Sometimes referred to as Comet Halley, it was formed 4.5 billion years ago.

Halley’s Comet was named after Edmund Halley who predicted the next time it would be seen. After his prediction came true, the comet was named after him. Halley’s Comet is about 6 miles across in length and is composed of rock, dust, and ice. The next time that Haley’s Comet will be visible to us is in the year 2061.

That is an amazing comet, but I doubt that the comet was formed over 4.5 billion years ago, or millions of years ago. The truth is that comets disintegrate and have an average life span of around 10,000 to about 100,000 years. In fact it should melt a little earlier because of the Sun’s rays melting it faster. This gives the big bang hypothesis a huge problem. How can there still be so many comets around, they should have all disappeared by now. Maybe there was never really a Big Bang.

Ok I like this website. In my Class we have to do an current event every month. But, what I don’t see is that you do not have the date when this article was issued and it is needed by many of my papers. Also, you should have the author or the Associated Press put down under the article. Some people need that on their paper as well. i would like to visit your site more often but I do need a good paper and this site does not have the requirments that my paper has. So, if I were you I would at least put the date it was issued and the author’s name after the article.

    Sincerely,

    Lizzie

the author got this one wrong, scientists do not think that it was formed 4.5 billion years ago.

  16. hobgob

on the nasa website it says that people believe comets are formed from the debris that formed planets 4.5 billion years ago, i think that might be where the misunderstanding comes from

  17. Doom!

the world will not end in 2012 it will end in 2013

  18. zac

some information here is correct and i disagree with doom i doubt the world will end in 2012 or as the retard doom says 2013 due to the prediction in the year 2000 and a few years before that and now 2012 and now there saying if not 2012 2060 and 2080 if you believe the world/earth is going to end …. sorry but your just sad with no life.

Halley’s Comet was named after Edmond Halley. He found out it orbits every 76 years
Halley’s Comet is known as a periodic comet because the time it takes to orbit the Sun is less than 200 years.
It appeared in 1986 and will return again sometime in 2061
In 837, Halley’s Comet was closer to Earth than ever before, 3.2 million miles away.
    lol
