The Oldest Living Thing On Earth

The Oldest Living Thing On Earth

Trees live much longer than any other type of plant or animal. In fact it’s possible to know the age of a tree by counting the rings in its trunk (One ring generally equates to one year).

The oldest living tree and hence one of the oldest known living things on Earth is a bristlecone pine tree located in California, North America, it’s actually over 4600 years old, now thats old.

  14. Anonymo

Well, the only logical thing I can think of, is that he was referring to some kind of porous rock that had microbes living on it, or some moss. Otherwise, it makes absolutely no sense in the slightest. As for that tree, it looks rather dead to me.

  15. una

Hey there Bla! It’s not the rock breathing! Didnt you read the dialouge…. youre stupid arent you! Also you betty! Rocks have neutrons. When its hot they dont compress so the rocks get bigger. Now you understand! And people arent stupid I think theyre super nice because look at what theyve discover. Hey im not a nerd or a geek! I’m just smart and beautiful! No offense! Really! ROCKS ARE LIVING THINGs…
They Grow because of ACCRETION. They Breath. They Move. They Talk. And They can KEEL you. All you have to do is get a grown rock ,which is one half of your chest, and throw it to someone’s head. Presto. Dead Man.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_rock

There is no such thing as living rock, although some plants do look similar to rocks.

Una: You cannot say that because a rock is growing due to it’s atomic structure that it is alive, as everything that holds mass in our world has some form of atomic structure (living and non-living). While there are a few exceptions to this, “in biology, the science of living organisms, “life” is the condition which distinguishes active organisms from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, functional activity and the continual change preceding death.” As far as I know, rocks aren’t “born” and don’t “die” as other living matter does, as there merely are created through cooling of hot rock.

As far as looking for older living “things” than this tree here, check out:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_long-living_organisms

There are some plants that are believed to have been living for over 100,000 years!

  36. Phil

Is there a point to all these insults. or are you all very sad.

  37. josh

i’ve never seen a living rock and i’ve never seen a rock get bigger either. most rock are breakoff from mountains. sand stone can get bigger if more sand gets pressed into it, its still not living though. the oldest species on earth: it depends on whitch theory you belive in. according to the big bang theory, bacteria are the oldest species, but many religons say differently. the most famous explanation of how the world came to be is the book of Genesis in the bible.

  38. krishna

    suck me off

  51. Monk

Actually the cheocote bush found in the Mojave, Sonora and Chihuahua deserts routinly lives thousands of years. The oldest known cheocote bush is about 11,000 years old.

  52. simply awsome

Yes, some rocks grow and caves are one of the few places you can see it happen. Of course, rocks do not grow like you do and they get bigger over thousands of years. You could watch all day and notThe rocks that grow in the cave are made by dripping water. This dripping water started out as rain that fell on the surface. Imagine that the limestone layers above the cave are a like giant sponge that soaks up water from rain and melting snow. As the water goes through holes and cracks in the rock it slowly dissolves a mineral out of the limestone called CALCIUM CARBONATE. If you have ever made lemonade you have seen how water can dissolve sugar. Well over time water can dissolve away rocks and minerals too. Calcium Carbonate is a very common mineral on earth because it is found in so many things like sea shells, limestone, the growing cave rocks and even your bones and teeth. Well, this Calcium Carbonate stays in the water until the water drips into the cave. At that point any place where water drips a tiny amount of Calcium Carbonate comes out of the water and crystallizes into a rock called CALCITE. As more water drips in the cave, more Calcite is formed and so new rocks start and the older ones keep growing. These growing cave rocks are often called CAVE DEPOSITES because they are made of layer apon layer of Calcite that the water deposited. see any growth.

  53. simply awsome

u r a moron JAMES rocks do not breathe but hey they do grow…. :D

  54. Ryleigh

Brandon you are retarded. Coral is an animal. Therefore its living. Dude im 10 and I know that. Hate to burst your bubble. Rocks arent alive. Coral is :)

  55. jibola

    wow thats old, real old

  56. Brett Bishoff

I`m thinking most of you are missing the question here…..The question is, “What is the oldest living thing on the earth”…….As in, from birth to date….so to speak…..So the oldest living thing which started it`s life over 4600 years ago and is still alive is the bristlecone pine tree …..Thank You
