Fact: Sharks Aren’t That Dangerous ?

Did you know that according to the Florida Museum of Natural History, more people die of alligator attacks than shark attacks. In the past decade the annual average of deaths due to dog attacks is 144 whilst the annual average of deaths due to shark attacks is just 11.

Here are some more interesting comparisons. More people die of snake bites than shark attacks. More people die of car collisions with wild deer than shark attacks, and funnily enough more people die of falling coconuts than shark attacks. Sharks are vicious but they’re not the world’s number one killer.

    That is interesting. Did all of the information come from the Florida Museum of Natural History, including the comparisions?

    First of all how many people live in the sea when compared to people living on land.
    We cannot equate like this i presume

    Sharks, thanks to our environmentally easy going Red Chinese friends, are on the fast track to extiction (Shark Fin Soup). But, they did have 65 million years to prepare for it. Evolution must have stopped for them?

    O MY GOSH I AM SO FREAKING TIRED OF PEOPLE CALLING SHARKS VICIOUS!!! Sharks only kill 5 people a year and people kill 100million sharks a year, so 3 sharks are killed every second. Without sharks all you ignorant dumbasses would choke, because by keeping plankton eaters in check, sharks protect phytoplankton, which produces 70% of our oxygen. Sharks aren’t one bit dangerous, its just stupid people believe everything the media tells them. Sharks: Jaws. Dolphins: Flipper. So now we think of sharks as bloodthirsty killers and dolphins as playful friends of humans. So then why do dolphins kill more people than sharks? Plus coconuts. And lightning. And choking on gummy sharks or falling in sand holes or getting mercury poisoning from eating shark fin soup! I bet none of you even know that great whites are more endangered than tigers, polar bears, and snow leopards! The world’s most threatened group of species will never make it unless the stupidity ends!!!

    What kind of “science-facts” doesn’t provide sources? One that posts stupid untrue “facts” like “coconuts kill more people than sharks.”

    http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2405/are-150-people-killed-each-year-by-falling-coconuts

    See what i did there? Took 30 seconds out of my day to find a reputable source (link cites scientific publications) so that I won’t be that idiot who thinks coconuts are the devil…
    Coconut vs. shark? I’ll take the coconut

      @Mmyup:

      So much of science is just reports and research done in labs and so many sources are questionable. Many scientific studies are actually crushed and deemed un-reliable or even wrong after just a couple of years.

      Some stand the trial of time other’s don’t. The point is everyone has their sources and anyone can choose to agree or disagree with them if they have the scientific background to do so.

      So having sources doesn’t always mean the fact is unquestionable. One should always question sources and check them, that’s a good thing but by having them in a list at the bottom of the article doesn’t ensure any greater accuracy.

      More so I think most of the facts on this site are quite verifiable and the site also doesn’t seem to be like the New Scientist or larger sites aimed at the larger scientific community, rather a place to have some fun and learn too.

      They do mention in their goals to deliver science in a fun and easy to understand way. Maybe not citing sources and sticking to mainstream common facts makes life more fun for the people that hangout here…

      Just my views of course…. I still enjoy the site and many of the facts do mention the studies behind the statements.

      @Mmyup

      Nice article, maybe this should be re-worded to more people get bumped on the head from falling cocounuts than shark attacks. Still an impressive statistic even if the real value is just 15 and not 150 :)

    Cool stuff guys, sharks however still scare the jeepers out of me… After watching Jaws and reading about great whites and tiger sharks I don’t think I’ll be going scuba diving again…

    @Mmyup: Yeah would rather take on a coconut too!
